Visa Information

As of my last knowledge update in January 2022, visa regulations and requirements can change, so it’s essential to check the latest information from official sources. Here is a general overview of Nepal visa information:

  1. Visa Types:
    • Tourist Visa: For those visiting Nepal for tourism purposes.
    • Business Visa: For individuals traveling for business-related activities.
    • Work Visa: For foreign nationals working in Nepal.
    • Diplomatic and Official Visa: For diplomatic and official passport holders.
  2. On-Arrival Visa:
    • Most travelers can obtain a visa on arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu and various land border points.
    • Visa on arrival is available for citizens of many countries, including the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, and many European nations.
  3. Visa Extension:
    • Tourist visas can be extended at the Department of Immigration in Kathmandu or its branch offices in Pokhara and other major cities.
    • Extensions are typically granted for a maximum of 150 days in a visa year (January–December).
  4. Visa Fees:
    • Visa fees vary depending on the duration of stay and the type of visa. The fees are payable in USD, and other major currencies are also accepted.
    • Children under the age of 10 are generally exempt from visa fees.
  5. Online Visa Application:
    • The Department of Immigration also provides an online visa application system. Travelers can fill out the application form in advance and bring a copy with them.
  6. Visa Requirements:
    • Generally, the following documents are required for a tourist visa on arrival:
      • Passport with at least six months of validity from the date of entry.
      • Passport-sized photos.
      • Completed visa application form.
      • Visa fees in cash (USD or other accepted currencies).
  7. Overland Entry:
    • If entering Nepal overland, such as from India or Tibet, it’s advisable to check current regulations, as visa rules may vary.
  8. Restricted Areas:
    • Certain trekking areas in Nepal, especially those bordering Tibet, may require additional permits or restrictions. It’s crucial to be aware of these and obtain the necessary permits before trekking in such regions.
  9. Visa for Mountaineering:
    • Climbers intending to climb mountains in Nepal need to obtain special permits from the Department of Immigration.

It’s highly recommended to check the official website of the Department of Immigration of Nepal or consult with the nearest Nepalese embassy or consulate for the most up-to-date and accurate information regarding visa requirements and regulations before planning your trip.
